Volunteer Testimony || Alani

Alani Vanroosebeke | Spain | Short term ESC 2024 | Coordinating and hosting organization: IDC

Greetings! I’m Alani and I come from Spain. I studied sustainable development and I’m now
working mostly in permaculture and organic farming. Working and living in a permaculture farm
last year settled very steadily in my the desire to continue in that path and learn as much as I
can not only in the fields I mentioned but also in those that really call my attention like mycology
and key-line design. So naturally the mushroom growing project of this association called my
attention and made me apply for the position to come. Now that I’m here, our job at the
campsite is pretty straightforward, besides taking care of the animals we manage almost all
parts of mushroom growing and harvesting. We collect used coffee grounds from cafes, mix
them up with the necessary ingredients, bag them and then later on care for them at the fruiting
house where they developed into the mushrooms we collect. Things don’t always go smoothly
but we have a nice team of volunteers, so we rely and help each other, and if neither of those
works, we play badminton and laugh together, which I think is always one of the biggest charms
of the relationships we build while volunteering.
