Volunteer Testimony: Gema

Gema Alemán, 25 years old, Spain. ESC Short term volunteer at IDC, autumn 2025.

Hello! My name is Gema, I am 25 years old and I come from Murcia, a city in southern Spain. I enjoy sports and nature. I decided that I wanted to work with animals, so I began studying to become a veterinary assistant in 2020. After working in the sector, I realised that the most important thing for me at work is a good atmosphere and camaraderie.

I have volunteered with various associations in my city and it has been a wonderful experience. When I discovered the European Solidarity Corps, I knew it would be a great opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, especially when I discovered IDC. I really liked their philosophy and their projects suited me perfectly. I had been trying for some time to live a more sustainable lifestyle and be more conscious of what I consume, and I know I will learn a lot from this experience.

We are building the new place in Gardie, we do workshops related to ecology and sustainability, sharing routines and working with colleagues in the natural environment is interesting and I am learning a lot. I am connecting with nature and with myself. Although I sometimes miss the city, this closeness to nature feels very good.
