Volunteer profile: Robert Condon

Hello my name is Robert, I am 29 years old and I come from a city called Limerick in the south west of Ireland.

After many years of working in the service industry I found myself wanting a change in life. I wanted to experience a different way of living, one that was more rewarding than the mundane 9-5 Monday to Friday office job or the late night shift in the bar.

I signed up for an account on the ESC website and after looking for many months at different projects and making different excuses as to why I wouldn’t be suitable for certain project’s, I finally came across the IDC Be Green project.

The Be Green project really made me interested when I read about the opportunity to learn more about a sustainable way of life, be in nature, work with animals, learn french, meet people from different backgrounds and to experience life in a rural part of France.

Over the next year I hope to learn more about a sustainable way of living, our impact on the environment, develop my people skills, become more independent and take the opportunity to learn about a healthy balanced diet.

I am very happy I took the opportunity to come to the Be Green project. I may have been nervous when I was leaving home about what was to come but after a couple of days I settled in and I am very happy to call this place my new home for the next 12 months. The campsite is located in Lastours which is about 20 kilometres from the city of Carcassonne. Carcassonne is a beautiful city that is most famous for its medieval fortress, Cité de Carcassonne, that is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. There are many interesting villages and walking trails close by so you will never be without something to do with your free time.
