Volunteer Testimony: Serena

Serena Gerardi (Italy). Long term volunteer at École Créative (October 2025 – July 2026).

Bonjour !

Volunteer Testimony: Serena

Serena Gerardi (Italy). Long term volunteer at École Créative (October 2025 – July 2026).

Bonjour !
My name is Serena; I am 28 years old and Italian. I chose to undertake a volunteer placement with the ESC because I wanted to take a break from my life in Italy. I returned to my hometown in July after living in the Netherlands for three years, and I wasn’t ready to start my life over in Milan. Furthermore, I had always dreamed of volunteering—of having the chance to help others without expecting anything in return—and, finally, of living in a rural community. I have always lived in a big city and sometimes wondered what a slower-paced life, closer to nature, might be like. But the main reason I came here is that I love France and want to learn French so I can speak it fluently.

I was particularly drawn to this assignment because it offers me the chance to support teachers with a theater project—my chosen field of study. Generally speaking, the role involves assisting teachers at a Montessori school in a rural setting at the foot of the Pyrenees with their daily activities. Heidrun, another German volunteer, and I look after the children before school starts in the morning, assist those who need help during Montessori sensory activities, heat up their lunch, supervise them while they play outside after eating, and help out during afternoon activities. Finally, we are responsible for cleaning the premises.
At the beginning of this experience, I was a bit lost, as it was difficult to settle into such a rural area, and I was frustrated at not being able to communicate in French.

But after two weeks, things improved because the teachers were really welcoming and understanding. They also organize weekend activities to help us integrate into the community—something I find very positive, as it allows me to get to know French culture better, and specifically the culture of this region. I feel closer to nature now, and I’ve started rock climbing at an indoor gym every Wednesday with the parent of one of the children. It’s great fun! I hope I’ll be able to go mountain climbing in the spring.
