Final testimonies: Serena and Heidrun

Serena Gerardi, long term ESC volunteering at École Créative (october 2025 – july 2026)

A unique adventure which, if experienced with the right attitude, can truly change the person who goes on it. I met some wonderful people, whose kindness was completely unexpected, and I got to know myself all over again; I saw myself through a different lens, moving from a hectic city like Milan to a calmer, sunnier life surrounded by nature. At times, this drastic change took its toll, but being surrounded by lovely people helped me throughout the whole experience. I formed a deep friendship with Heidrun, the other volunteer, and was lucky enough to learn about her (German) culture as well as French culture. The workshops where the CES projects were presented also offered a wonderful insight into worlds and cultures I’d never known before. And this project in particular has completely transformed my view of pedagogy and the way I interact with children. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the chance to have this experience.

Heidrun Wellmer, long term ESC volunteer at École Créative (september 2025 – september 2026).

One year ago, I was sitting on a bus on my way to France, not knowing what this year would bring.
Now I know. This year taught me a lot in a fluid, unexpected and very personal way.
I learned to express myself in both French and English, and had to find different ways of communicating when words were not enough.
I became a lot more independent and more aware of the privileges I have, and of the responsibility that comes along with them.
Over time, I found my place in the school. A place where I could contribute, and where I could take initiative. I learned to propose ideas, adapt to different circumstances and find solutions along the way.
I learned about a different place, a different way of life. I met wonderful people who invited me into their lives and took me on little adventures.
So after all, I think I learned the most about human connection. About emotions. About being there for one another. About children.
My heart is full of beautiful moments, little and big adventures, lessons learned and, most of all, lovely people.
École Créative, you changed me in ways I am still discovering.
Thank you soooooo much!
