Volunteer Testimony: María

María Botey (Spain). Short term volunteer for the « Mushrooms Growers » Project at IDC, 2026.

Hello! My name is María, from Spain. I am 24 years old. I hold a degree in Biotechnology, and after finishing my master’s I wanted to figure out what I wanted to do in the future, so I decided to do a voluntary service to discover new opportunities while feeling like making a positive impact on society, and that is exactly what I found! 🙂

This project has helped me become more concerned about sustainability and the changes that we can make a contribution with our small actions, such as giving waste a second life, like we did in the project, where coffee waste turned into mushrooms.

Other great things that the project has given me are: the opportunity to meet people from all around the world and learn about their different cultures; the possibility of improving my French skills, with the day-to-day interaction with locals by going to the different cafes, and with some French lessons (thank you, Alicia); the chance to explore and discover the beautiful south of France (Montpellier, Marseille, Perpignan, Narbonne, Toulouse… and all the nature), and a new way of learning all kinds of things about myself.

Time has passed by so quickly.

A bientôt!
