Volunteer profile: Pietro Steffano

Ciao a tutti! I am Pietro, 21 years old from Milan, Italy. At IDC I do my short term EVS for 2 months starting in September 2017.

In Milan I study philosophy and work, so I use my brain quite a lot. Well, and that is why I am here: Not thinking so much anymore! I want to spend some time doing physical work and to be outside in the nature.

My passion is riding the bicycle. So I decided to take the bicycle from Torino to come here instead of the plane. I took me 5 days to make the trip. I was sleeping in a tent which I built with the help of my bicycle or in my hammock.

I think it is great that we have so many young people living here together in a community. We do not need managers to tell us how to live together because we are able to manage ourselves.

What I learned here is especially how to use tools and how to build. Every day I am learning something new. My tasks are mostly outside. I help to build the greenhouse with Alessandro, water the plants, care for the donkeys, but I also participate in the common tasks such as cooking. My aim for my time here is to put the recycling material for the greenhouse and the waste mine in order.

I think that doing philosophy while cutting potatoes, might be better than with a book.

What I really enjoy about this place is to wake up and be already almost outside. I prefer to spend my time working outside in the sun with fresh air. And I like to do not spend so much time thinking here, I can do my work and be always busy.
