Volunteer Testimony: Christian

Christian Fita, 28 years old, Spain. ESC short term at IDC, autumn 2025.

My name is Christian, I am 28 years old and I come from a village in Valencia, Spain. I studied History at university because I have always been fascinated by understanding how we have arrived at this point as a society, how past events have shaped the present and help us to imagine the future. For many years now, I have been very clear that I want to be a teacher because I love the idea of being able to pass on not only knowledge to young people, but also curiosity and a desire to learn, as I believe that education is essential if we want to leave a better future for the next generation.

Personally, I think I am a very active person; I like to be on the move and feel that I am contributing something useful. Since I was a child, I have loved nature and animals, and over time I have become interested in the topic of sustainable development, something I would like to include in my classes so that students can also learn how we can improve our lifestyle and be responsible with the environment.

To be honest, the last few months have been difficult for me on a personal level, and I felt I needed a change of scenery. When I read about this volunteer programme, I liked its ideas, its way of understanding the world and its values, and I think that during my time here I have been able to meet incredible people with very interesting stories and improve my English. We have created a very fun group atmosphere and we are all doing our bit.

In addition, the daily work is very enriching. Sometimes the tasks are simple, such as simply transporting an animal to the vet, and other times they are a little harder, such as preparing the fencing for the animals or digging holes to plant new trees, but it is always fun and we have plenty of time for ourselves and to do other things. This time in France is also helping me to rediscover myself. I am learning to appreciate
things that I didn’t used to value so much, to live more calmly and to be more aware of my surroundings. Overall, I am very happy that I decided to come here and I hope to continue learning as much from my colleagues as from the project itself.
